What is a Stainless Steel Vacuum Breaker?

It is a device designed to prevent vacuum formation in piping systems. It does this by allowing air to enter the system when a vacuum occurs, breaking the vacuum and preventing the system from completely closing. Vacuum breakers are commonly used in piping systems to prevent backflow, which is the reverse flow of normal water movement in the system.

There are two main types of vacuum breakers: atmospheric vacuum breakers and pressure vacuum breakers. Atmospheric vacuum breakers are typically installed at the end of a hose bib or other outdoor faucet, and they prevent backflow by allowing air into the system when water flow is shut off, thereby breaking the vacuum.

Pressure vacuum breakers are designed to allow air into the system to break the vacuum and prevent backflow when the water pressure drops below a certain level.

Working Principle

Condensation is an undesirable condition in steam piping systems. It occurs when steam in the environment condenses due to cooling caused by line breaks at high pressure. The steam turning into water causes a volume reduction in the environment, resulting in a gradual decrease in pressure and the formation of a vacuum in the system.

The UNOX UKV-70DP Stainless Steel Vacuum Breaker is installed at appropriate points in the piping system to balance the pressure in the environment. Essentially, it functions as a check valve in steam lines. When the pressure drops, it admits air to balance the pressure, and when high pressure builds up, it closes to maintain pressure balance.

These are general-purpose products designed for use on lines where steam passes and condensate forms, produced in small sizes.
