What is a Wafer Type Butterfly Valve?

Wafer type butterfly valves perform the opening and closing function by rotating a disc, made of nickel, stainless steel, or other materials (AISI 304, AISI 316, AL-BR), which is fixed around a central shaft. Butterfly valves regulate, start, slow down, or completely stop the flow of liquid or gas by compressing the disc around the shaft with a rubber or plastic seal. They feature a quarter-turn rotating disc and a sealing gasket, used to stop, regulate, or start flow.

How Does a Wafer Type Butterfly Valve Work?

Wafer type butterfly valves are designed with protruding ears covering the entire body to align with the bolt holes on the flange where they will be installed. They are mounted between two flanges using bolts, studs, and nuts. This design prevents removal of only one side of the piping system from the valve. Besides manual operation, pneumatic and electric actuators can also be installed for automated control.

Placed between pipe flanges, flange bolts surround the valve body. They are easy to install but cannot be used as isolation valves. Manual control is possible, and pneumatic or electric actuators can be mounted for operation.
